Applied Theatre Productions was founded in January 2009 by Lisa Timney and Claudio Fernandes, two professionals who wanted to explore the use of drama and theater techniques to support teenagers and adults with autism and related conditions developing social and communication skills and self esteem while collaborating with typical peers.

In March 2009 they established a dynamic group of 10 people with Autism and similar developmental profiles aged between 15 and 22. Through a series of guided workshops consisting of drama games, role play, music and performance, opportunities were created for the group to take on and try out new social roles, build self confidence, develop flexible behaviour and learn social and communication skills.

As the group grew in confidence they took charge in deciding collaboratively how to structure and run their sessions which resulted in the production of two live performances.

“The curious apprentice who activated the time machine and went on a wondrous adventure back in time” July 2009 – A play that explored key events in history

“Miser Rock” December 2009. A Christmas musical inspired by “ A Christmas Carol” that explored the current financial crisis.

The group is now well established and works under the name of ‘LOL Ensemble’. Through devising and producing more performances the group aims to raise autism awareness and we are actively seeking opportunities to build on their achievements.
